The West Byron Urban Land Release Area is a 108 hectare site located 2.5 kilometres west of Byron Bay. Most of this land is owned by the Byron Bay West Landowners Association.
This land has been identified as a potential urban land release area for about 25 years.
In September 2009, the NSW Minister for Planning declared the land as a potential State Significant Site. There are specific planning guidelines for these sites. This means the land was subject to a State Significant Site Study that has identified zoning options and other development controls. The study process involves environmental, technical, social and economic studies to ensure that appropriate planning controls are achieved.
